Mail me art (2)

Mail Me Art is a British-based project, run by Darren Di Lieto, the founder and co-editor of the illustration news portal the Little Chimp Society. Over the course of a year, the first Mail Me Art project brought together a vast collection of artistic work sent in the form of mail by both professional and amateur artists of all ages from across the world. A wide variety of media were used in an equally wide variety of styles and the work arrived on everything from postcards and envelopes to boxes and pieces of wood.

Here are two of my submissions for the Mail me Art 2 project. They are featured on the Mail me art website. More about the project can be seen here.

Abandoned Chairs

One of my photographs made it into a book all about abandoned chairs.

“Why do we see so many chairs left desolate in strange places?
Maybe some were used as a makeshift staff room for people sunning themselves during their coffee break or as convenient oversized door wedges. Others have no obvious or logical explanation. There is a degree of mystery with abandoned chairs, and the possible reasons and narratives behind the image instantly engages the viewer.”

The book is available here.

Photograph taken with an old Lubitel TLR camera.

The uplifting book of breasts

The Uplifting Book of Breasts features the work of artists, writers, photographers and poets all celebrating the female form in order to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.

The book is light, only costs £5, and presents the perfect opportunity to feel good about helping a worthwhile cause while providing an inspiring addition to any bookshelf. Click here to buy!

I created a piece of artwork for inclusion in the book. The finished piece of art (digitally printed stretched canvas) was auctioned off to make even more money for the Breast Cancer Care charity.

mla2003

Mike Cobb and I collaborated to produce MLA2003. A book that detailed the best work from ourselves’ and fellow students’ final year at University. Why MLA2003? Our degree was called MediaLab Arts, and it was 2003. Mike and I prefered ‘Organic pomegranate‘, but somehow couldn’t persuade our peers!

Stelarc Ken

This project was inspired by a lecture about the future of children’s toys by Geoff Cox. By combining a Ken doll with Stelarc’s cyborg inspired ‘art’, I created a doll with all the attributes of a cyborg.

Stelarc is a poet and scientist of contemporary times and his body, that he himself defined as ‘obsolete’, and others has defined as ‘posthuman’, is the end of the religious principle of body’s inviolability. Moreover he made a mutual correspondence between his body and his art, and this led to his iconic definition. My creation – ‘Stelarc Ken’ – builds upon the idea of iconic individuals being replicated in toy form.
